7 Alternate long-weekend trips in UK

Who doesn’t enjoy looking up holidays in advance and planning possible travels? Long weekends, public holidays, annual leave – I’m sure lots of people are excited to check out all possible vacation dates at the beginning of the year! This year, I’ve been able to combine work and travel and visit some of the places that were on my wishlist: Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, for instance. However, I haven’t got much of an opportunity yet to explore UK. I had just visited London briefly last year, but I would really like to get the UK travel visa again and re-explore London, along with a few other places. Now, looking at all the beautiful travel-related posts on my social media news feed, and having access to the huge wealth of information online, I have come across a few interesting ideas for travelling in UK. I think I’m going to draw up my London wishlist in another post, but for now, would just draw up a list of alternate stays one could try out for long-weekends or similar short vacations. If I had a driving license and was travelling with a group of friends or my family, I would definitely consider renting a car and travelling around. But, since that isn’t the case, I’ll probably just stick to trains and buses. However, perhaps, some of you could think about getting  an affordable car hire, like Thrifty or so, from one of their numerous locations in UK.

Anyhow, let’s get started with the list!

1.Explore Herefordshire & Worcestershire-

Nestled near the Welsh border, Herefordshire and Worcestershire are famous for the enthralling woods of Wye Valley, magnificent medieval castles and cathedrals and a charm of rural life. Staying in beautiful cottages in Herefordshire and Worcestershire should certainly make for a relaxing vacation. If you like, you could also take a panoramic tour of the countryside soaring high in a helicopter!

2.Ahoy! Pirate Weekend at YHA Boggle Hole in Whitby

Whitby could be a good idea for a refreshing family weekend along the seaside. I came across a hostel with a pirate-themed décor on Robin Hood Bay, and would like to check it out sometime! By the way, Whitby is also said to have connections with the Dracula story, and one could take a Dracula related tour that comes with actors, special effects and spooky stories. Also, they have a Captain Cook Memorial Museum in the city! You can get an insight into the city by reading these blog posts from Ruby Ruby Slippers and Sweetbriar dreams.

3.Surfing in Devon..or a cookery course and peaceful stay.

Whenever I think of surfing, I tend to think about Australia first, and then Florida. But, I only recently came across posts about surfing in the UK. Devon is one such place. Three of the popular surfing spots in Devon are enlisted on this blog post, if you’d be interested.

Besides, if you’d rather be interested in the art of cooking, you could also consider staying in one of the cottages and learning the art of cheese making or baking chocolate brownies by joining a cookery course. Think dreamy cottages beside the English Riviera in Torquay or in the port town of Bideford!

4.Adrenaline Rush in Cornwall

So, if you are a single traveller, Cornwall is where you should spend your weekend- kitesurfing! The adrenaline-charged water sport is the perfect adventure for your free soul. You can stay in a traditional farmhouse in the fishing villages of South and West Cornwall or rent a modern apartment near the enchanting beaches of North Cornwall to spend your day kitesurfing and your night drinking hot chocolate. Or you could consider glamping in Cornwall, just like the Aussie Flashpacker did!

5.Weekend with primates in Dorset..or watersports again!

Frankly, I wasn’t aware of Dorset earlier. But, recently found out that it is one of the top spots for water sports. Besides, you can find the Monkey World here, which is home to 240 rescued and endangered primates, and the world famous Jurassic Coast with a number of museums and heritage centres. This is something kids and perhaps, some adults would love too. You can stay in a quiet, idyllic country cottage by the cracking waves of the English Channel.

6.A Medieval Stay at YHA St Briavels

The YHA St Briavels is for all history lovers- single, married or kids! The hostel is located inside a 800 year old castle extraordinarily well preserved, with a rich heritage and interesting historical features. A secret dungeon, an old prison with 16th century graffiti by prisoners and a candlelit banquet hall that hosts medieval feasts-  your weekend at YHA St Briavels is sure to be memorable! Oh, and by the way, it is supposed to be one of the most haunted buildings in England! Check out the video by Forest Paranormal . Don’t get too scared though!

7.Enjoying culture and adventure activities in Yorkshire

The county of Yorkshire is known for it’s Roman and Viking heritage, along with the castles and medieval abbeys.A post by Cities Traveller got me interested in visiting the city and the region. Also, you can try out zorbing in Yorkshire, if the idea of racing down a hill at 30 miles an hour, strapped in a bubble with your insides rattled to a pulp, sounds interesting to you!

There are also other places I’d like to see, such as Stonehenge and Bath for sure, apart from Edinburgh, Kent and of course, Loch Ness,Dublin,Shetland to name a few. So many places to explore for sure!

Hope I get a chance to do so soon. What other places must I add on to my UK list for sure? Please do let me know!

  • OMG, so many of the places you have included here are on my list! Whitby (yep, I’ve read Dracula :D), Yorkshire, also Devon and a lot more of Lake District. I’ve spent a week in Lake District this year and it was so beautiful. 😉

  • On each of my trips to the UK, I’ve always enjoyed spending a couple of days in Oxford. So pretty, and so much history. (Came via #TheWeeklyPostcard)
